What we collect

Only what we need to quote, book and carry out your trip.

  • About you: your name, email address and mobile number, and your company if you give one.
  • About the trip: the dates, the area or destination, the vehicle, the number of passengers, the pickup and drop-off points and any note you add.
  • About payment: the amount, whether it went through, and, for a card, the card type and last four digits, which our payment partner tells us. We never see or store your full card number, expiry date or CVV.
  • About how you found us: the website or campaign that sent you, if the link carried one.

We do not use advertising trackers or tracking cookies. To count visitors we use a code made from your connection that changes every day and cannot be traced back to you. Our site uses one cookie that keeps your booking form secure while you fill it in. When our team records something done on a booking, we keep only the first half of the internet address it came from.

If you ask Kay-Lee, the help assistant on our site, a question, it is used only to answer you and is not stored or logged. If you give her a booking reference, she tells you only what that booking's page shows. If you choose to continue on WhatsApp, your question goes with you in the message you send.

Why we use it

  • To give you a quote, take your booking and payment, confirm your car and driver, and keep you updated by email. This is necessary to carry out the booking you asked for.
  • To keep the financial and tax records the law requires.
  • To prevent fraud and misuse of our booking and payment pages, which is in our and our customers' legitimate interest.
  • To understand, in anonymous totals, how people find and use our site so we can improve it.

We send you emails about your booking only. We do not send marketing, and we never sell your information.

Who else sees it

Only people and services that need it to do the job, each bound to keep it confidential and secure.

  • Our operations team, to arrange and support your trip. Their access to our booking console requires a personal sign-in and is logged.
  • The chauffeur assigned to your trip, who receives what they need to carry it out, such as the pickup point and time.
  • NjiaPay, our payment partner, which processes your card payment and refunds. Payments are processed through our group's payment account, which is why your statement may say "Payment to Detour".
  • Google Cloud, which hosts our website and database in its Johannesburg region.
  • Resend, which delivers our booking emails.
  • Meta, if you choose to contact us on WhatsApp, under WhatsApp's own terms.

We share information with authorities only when the law requires us to.

Information sent outside south africa

Our database is hosted in South Africa. Some of our service providers, such as our email delivery service, are based outside South Africa, so the information needed to send you an email is processed abroad. We use only providers bound by agreements and laws that give your information protection at least equivalent to POPIA, as section 72 of that Act requires.

How long we keep it

We keep booking and payment records for five years after your trip, because tax law requires us to keep financial records that long. After that we delete them or remove anything that identifies you. The anonymous visitor counts never identify anyone.

How we protect it

  • Your name, email address, mobile number, addresses, notes and your driver's details are encrypted in our database.
  • Card details are handled only by our payment partner, on their secure page, never by us.
  • Everything between your browser and our site travels over an encrypted connection.
  • Our booking console is open only to named team members with a personal sign-in, and what they do on a booking is logged.

If we ever believe your personal information has been accessed without authority, we will tell you and the Information Regulator as POPIA requires.

Your rights

Under POPIA you may ask us, at no charge, to tell you what personal information we hold about you and to give you a copy, to correct anything that is wrong, or to delete information we no longer have a reason to keep. You may also object to how we use it. Contact our Information Officer with your booking reference; we may ask you to confirm who you are before we act, so that we never give your information to someone else.

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your information or your request, you may complain to the Information Regulator at inforegulator.org.za.

Children

Bookings must be made by an adult. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18 except, where a trip needs it, the details an adult booking for them gives us.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle personal information, we will update this policy and its effective date. If a change affects a booking you have already made, we will tell you.
